Determination of Palladium concentration in Pd-Fe plating bath

The analysis allows the quantification of Pd concentration in Pd-Fe electroplating baths and recovery waters. Monitoring the amount of palladium in electroplating baths is essential to set the correct parameters (e.g., deposition time, deposition thickness) in the electroplating process ensuring its good performance and preventing aesthetic and/or functional defects in finished products. In addition, controlling the concentration of palladium in the water used for washing galvanized parts allows optimizing the recoveries of this valuable. This is particularly useful in order to reduce possible economic losses by companies, especially given the high costs of this raw material.

Method

Test type: End Point.

Testing time: 3 minutes.

Analysis sessions with multiple samples are possible up to a maximum of 16 tests for CDR GalvanLab® and 3 tests for CDR GalvanLab® Junior.

Place the test tubes containing reagent R1 in one of the incubation cells and let them warm for at least 5 minutes.

Collect 50 µL of sample with a pipette. Use a new tip for each test to prevent contamination from previous samples.

Carefully clean the outside of the pipette tip with blotting paper, avoiding contact between the extremity of the tip and the paper.

Place the sample in the cuvette. Keeping the tip immersed in reagent, press and release the piston of the pipette several times.

Gently shake the cuvette 2-3 times.

Place the cuvette in one of the incubation cells and start the timer by pressing the timer icon.

Gently shake the cuvette 2-3 times.

Select the cuvette to be read from the display. Place the cuvette in the cell marked with the blue light and press READ.

Collect 50 µL of R2 with the pipette.

Add 50 µL of R2 to the cuvette without touching the tip in the liquid, R1 + sample. In case of contamination, replace the tip.

Place the cuvette in one of the incubation cells and start the timer by pressing the timer icon.

Principle of the test

Palladium content is determined by its reaction with a chromogen that develops a coloration, the optical intensity of which is proportional to the concentration of Pd in the analyzed sample.
